Education and Training
Just as important as raising awareness to the issues of sexual abuse and human trafficking is educating and training people on protecting themselves and their families from danger and making a difference in their communities. If all we did was tell them about it, they would feel paralyzed and overwhelmed, helpless and fearful. To address this issue, at each of our events we apply what we call the ‘Starfish Principal’.
Loren Eisley wrote a short story that talked about the fate of ten thousand star fish that had washed up on a beach.
An old woman notice a young boy walking up and down the beach throwing a single star fish at a time back in the water. The old women told the young boy that he couldn’t save them all. He could not really make a difference, so what was the point of him trying? The young boy’s response as he bent and threw another starfish back in over the waves was, “I made a difference to that one.” The story concludes with the old lady joining the little boy in saving the star fish. As the day wore on, the seaside community all turned out and got involved, and all the star fish ended up being saved.
